Abe Lincoln was known in real life to have a wonderful sense of humor, a warm smile and a love of laughter, but in his day and time people posed for photographs like they would for an oil painting, looking very solemn and severe. He lived long before the snapshot age with its fast shutter speeds that invite people to look up and smile almost without thinking, for photos they can see in an instant.

According to Doris Kearns Goodwin in her book "Team of Rivals" Lincoln smiled and laughed and told endless funny stories. However, I have yet to find a photograph of him smiling.
