To find better jobs and get away from segregation. Also, blacks were bitterly treated still after the war from the southern elite and white poors' so they probably wanted to be with the people who had fought a war for them.
It's slightly subconscious. Ever since the Civil War ended with the triumph of the North and slavery was abolished, racism still persisted. For a lot of African Americans the North represents a place with an open minded mentality in comparison to the old fashioned thinking of the South.

Southern racism was a lot harsher than northern racism. Southern racism existed in every fabric of life -- in every possible way. Black men could be lynched for simply not stepping off a sidewalk as a white person approached! Frequent racial harassment included cross burnings, property damages (fires, bricks in windows, etc.), loss of employment (for participation or allegation thereof), kidnappings, murders, lynchings, voter discrimination, & other forms of discrimination in the laws. Black people were tired of all this. They were exasperated. They wanted hope. They wanted the freedom to live as human beings not as second class citizens as they were treated on a daily basis. They were tired of raising their children under segregation. So, they left for the North in search of the "American Dream." A LOT of Blacks were FORCED to move North for their own safety (like my maternal great grandfather) and for the livelihood of their loved ones. This migration was not only in slavery, but also throughout the American Civil Rights Movement. A great number of Blacks migrated into Canada as well.
A:Jobs. The answer is jobs. After being freed former slaves needed to support themselves. The southern states were far less industrialized. Most freed slaves stayed in the south. Those who left went to major industrial areas like New York or Chicago. To seek job opportunities and to escape racism that was still taking place during this time.
The North provided more job opportunities beyond agriculture, better living standards, the right to vote, integrated schools, and the opportunity to hold political office.
To escape prosecution most black in the south around the time of abraham licoln were slaves.
