Blackouts in World War 2 happened because nations had started using airplanes to drop bombs on coastal areas and towns or cities. The Blackout consisted of having all street lights, business lights, porch lights, car lights, window lights off or blocked by dark drapes or shields. This made it harder for pilots to see targets in these areas.
