The Dawes Act was implemented in the United States in 1887, with the goal of dividing up Native American lands so that individuals would live separately from their tribes, thus becoming US citizens. The overall goal of the act was to assimilate Native Americans into European American culture. However, it did not work. Native Americans continued to carry on their beliefs, and passed them down from generation to generation.

sometimes the "Friends" of the native Americans were not much more helpful than their enemies. many sympathizers were supporters of assimilation, in which native Americans were expected to give up their beliefs and way of life and become part of a white culture. although the native Americans had lost much of their means of independent living, they did NOT want to lose their culture as well.

the dawes act also was there to help and support assimilation . the aim was to americanize the native Americans by cultivating in them to desire to own property and to farm. the dawes act broke up the reservations and distributed some of the reservation land (160 acres for farming- 320 acres for grazing) to each adult head of the NA family. by 1934, however, this failed because white settlers had taken about 2/3 the territory that had been set up for the NA.

Why was impressment a problem for the US?

The British were impressing American sailors ("impressing" meant forcibly capturing them and making them serve). The British claimed that these sailors were deserters from the Royal Navy. The US, as a sovereign nation, did not recognize the right of the British to do this. Impressment was eventually stopped after the conclusion of the war, in which Britain failed to gain any territory and failed to defeat the Americans.

Why do you think the civil war was so devastating?

Because the possible compromises had all been tried beforehand and failed. So it became a war of attrition, with both sides fighting on till the other was exhausted, and without anything much in the way of medical supplies, a wounded man usually meant a dead man.

Why do you think Wilson failed to push for quality for African American despite his prgressive reform?

Wilson, like Roosevelt and Taft, pushed aggressively for economic and political reforms but retreated on civil rights issues. Swayed by his southern upbringing and the support of northern whites, Wilson refused to expand the civil rights of African Americans.

The US tolerates each. Sometimes there is multiculturalism, sometimes there is assimilation. I tend to think, as long as the USA provides a good living, assimilation will win.
