Albert Gallatin (1761-1849) was a US legislator, official, diplomat, and educator, notably the Secretary of Treasury in 1803 when Thomas Jefferson purchased Louisiana from Spain. In 1831, he founded the University of the City of New York (now New York University). During the Lewis and Clark expedition, one of three tributaries of the Missouri was named for Gallatin.
