Because Americans could watch their sons die before their very eyes, in living color, all while watching television on the evening news while eating supper. The Huntley Brinkley Report; Walter Cronkite Report; Dan Rather in the field; were some of the heavies back then. It was common back then, for people to turn off the television during dinner time. It ruined appetites.

What was America like during the Vietnam War?

Vietnam was a very different war from previous wars such as World War I and World War II. In both those wars Americans felt and knew that the war was necessary and the enemy needed to be defeated because they were determined to take control of the US and Europe. However, in Vietnam, many Americans were unsure if the war was really right. The most prominent of the groups that opposed the war were the 'hippies' who practiced counterculture in order to protest the war. There was a very good reason that this particular group should lead the protests; they were the group that would be required to go to Viet Nam at the peril of their lives. At that time, the draft was mandatory. For this age group, this meant that if you couldn't afford to go to college, or you could not maintain your grades, you would be called up.Americans were very suspect of the Government's motive for involving the US in this country. We were purportedly there to protect South Viet Nam from Communist take over, the "Red Menace". But many Americans were not convinced that it was worth so many lives to make this attempt. Another big influence in how Americans viewed the war was the fact that they were able to watch and see the war on TV. Something that was impossible during either of the World Wars and Korea. It gave any American with a TV a step into the real life of war and how very unglamorous it was.The legacy of this war is very sad; veterans of the war returning to the US were not given respect for their service to their country as the vets of the previous wars had been. They were even sometimes derided as betrayers of the antiwar movement, even though they had no choice in serving unless they were to break the law and become fugitives. So many of the returning veterans came back with severe emotional problems from what they had witnessed, drug dependency and mental illnesses. These vets found little help from the government which resulted in a large group of that generation never regaining the ability to take care of themselves. Far too many lived with homelessness and addictions for many decades after their return.

Why did support of the Vietnam War begin to dwindle by the late 1960s?

Direct quote from a family member- a Lieutenant who did two tours in Vietnam."War is never the answer to many unless it directly affects us,once it hits your home and hurts you will oppose it,sadly the media played a huge role in making sure horrible things and misconceptions were right on the 5 o clock news every day,i still wonder who's side they were on,i am not sure they will ever know"In Short the Vietnam war was the first war to be covered by the media, they would be flown into a LZ after it was all clear to do interviews and take pictures, horrible battles were fought and then they expected these men to answer these questions and that turned into a lot of anger, commanding officers, most of them would literally kick them off the field, they did not believe in taking "snapshots" from one dead American to another, basically people stateside saw horrible images daily on the tv and just could not imagine how horrible it was, people did not understand war on tv and the media second guessed our U.S.A.F. all the time as they still do to this day.***there are many other reasons including, politics, the draft,Americans(some) believed it was none of "our buisness, most men fighting this war were very young,i am unsure of the average age but i do know it was around 18 years old for most soldiers(once the draft started)they also are among the most K.I.A.)***

the tv affected the us in both good and bad ways. it provides entertainment for Americans of all ages and it is a great souce of information via news or documentary channels.also, in the vietman war, the tv was just becoming a big hit and was in almost all of the people's houses.it changed the American's views on the war, though.at forst, everyone was in support of the war. journalists and reporters were all over vietman, and were taking pictures and videos to show the truth of the war, and the citizens didn't like it.
