The Battle of Saratoga is thought of as the turning point in the Revolutionary War for several reasons. It helped to rally the American troops and renew faith of the citizens. This victory, also, convinced potential allies, like France, to send aid to the Colonies.
The American victory at the two battles in late 1777 (18 days apart) meant the capture of a large number of British troops. In surrendering, General Burgoyne lost his bid to split the New England colonies from the Southern colonies. But even more importantly, it prompted the entry of France and Spain to the colonial side. France had already contributed arms to the rebels (as part of their ongoing national hostilities with Britain), but 4 months after the battle, on February 6, 1778, a formal Franco-American alliance was signed.
It actually encouraged foreign alliances as the battle proved to European countries that the U.S. might win against the British.
