Most people in the South at that time farmed and lived off the land, as well as the fact that most slaves only had agricultural skills. Land would allow them to work and make a living. This was however impeded by the development of the"black codes": laws that prohibited negros from owning land or working other than for a plantation owner.
Land ownership represented the first step of equality for the newly freed black slaves. In addition, acquiring an education for their children meant that although they only had the skills of uneducated farmers at this point, each subsequent generation could aim higher as a result of education.
