During the 50s and 60s women played a different role in society than they do today. Most women were stay at home moms and wives. When taking jobs outside of the home, these women worked as nurses, teachers, housekeepers, and nursemaids.

During the 1940's it was still a rarity to see a married woman with a job. However, World War II saw many women replacing the men who had gone off to war in the factories that were producing war materials. The 1950s brought a return to conservative values. Although more women were acquiring college degrees, many never worked a job. But there were still some pioneers during the period, such as Rosa Parks whose decision not to give up her seat on a segregated bus launched the Civil Rights Movement. The sixties began as another conservative period, but quickly launched into an era of profound social change, with many women seeking to throw off the roles society had previously forced them into. The 1970s marked the resumption of the Women's Rights Movement, and feminism moved into the forefront. This period signaled the beginning of liberated times for women, that brought them to their current societal position.
