The Mayflower Compact, signed by passengers of the Mayflower in 1620, was written in order to establish a government and ensure order once the ship landed. Because the ship would be landing in Massachusetts rather than the agreed upon Virginia Territory, there were some aboard the ship who expected to have full liberties. Fearing disorder, the Compact was written and signed by 41 of the 101 Mayflower passengers.
