Cardinal Richelieu, a Roman Catholic prelate, lived most of his life in Paris, France. He was born in 1585 and died in 1642.

CARDINAL RICHELIEU, whose proper named is Armand Jean du Plessis, Cardinal-Duke of Richelieu and of Fronsac, was the French Cardinal and Prime Minister of France who effectively ruled the country during Louis XIII's reign.
Cardinal Richelieu was a master in coordinating France's domestic and foreign affairs during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). His chief goal was to prevent France from being encircled by the Habsburg dynasty, which controlled lands in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Austria, and numerous other European possessions. As a result, Cardinal Richelieu actually supported the Protestant Swedes and German statelets against the Catholic Habsburgs, betraying his religious allegiance (he was a Catholic Cardinal), in order to preserve French independence. It was because of Richelieu's expert statesmanship that France would become the dominant power in Europe in the next century after the Peace of Westphalia, especially during the reign of Louis XIV.
In 1624 when Pascal was just one year old, Cardinal Richelieu was appointed Chief Minister by the king of France. In that position, he directed France's domestic policy as well as foreign policy which was largely dominated by the Thirty Years War. In 1651, Charles I was executed publicly after his army was defeated by the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War. On the year of Pascal's death 1663, France consolidated her possessions in the North America collectively called 'The New France' only to lose it a year later to the English.
