The first person to circumnavigate the globe was Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer. His expedition, which began in 1519, was the first to sail around the world, although Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines in 1521. The journey was completed by the remaining crew under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, who returned to Spain in 1522. This voyage provided critical insights into global geography and navigation.
