The current art style for the batman films, games and especially the comics (for quite some time now) is gothic, also the story with the simple premice of him seeing his parents killed and avenging them by destroying crime that has taken over a once productive and glorious city is not a 'happy-go lucky' type of story in any way.
Sorry if this doesnt quite explane it, Im a huge Bman fan and that makes sense to me so you might not really understand....
