China has fought many wars, but probably less than most European powers.

Although China is thousands of years old, and a former empire, it focused more on unifying its peoples and protecting them against foreign threats, like Mongolian tribes.

China did conquer foreign territory Like Vietnam and Korea, but it was mostly happy having control of China, which was one of the largest and most advanced societies for thousands of years, until Europe became dominant from the 17th century on.

They did however make surrounding nations pay tribute to China.

In recent centuries, two wars with Britain (1839-42 and 1856-60, the "Opium Wars"), France (1856-60 and 1883-85) and Japan (1894-95 and 1937-45) and a brief war against the western powers in 1900. The Mongol conquest spanned much of the 13th century. There have also been many internal conflicts from the Warring States period (4th-3rd centuries BCE) to the Taiping Rebellion (1851-64) and Communist victory (1946-49).

Pre-1949 China (Now Taiwan) was an ally of the US during WW2, and fought Japan during the Sino-Japanese War in 1894 (when considering the 2nd Sino-Japanese War as part of WW2...or at least leading up to it). Prior to that, China has fought many different dynasty wars. But for historians, the only war that China ever fought of importance (for them, the historians) is the Mongol wars involving Ghengis Khan, and his grandson Kubli Khan. Red China's first and only war was with the UN (United Nations) in Korea, 1950-1953; that's the only one, other than their revolution in '49 that got them the country to begin with; and "Border Clashes" in the 60's with the USSR; Vietnam in '79; and some Tibet/Nepal incidents.
