Also both had small petty kingdoms that experienced constant warfare, as each noble ran his fief, or land, as a small nation. Part of the difference lies in the fact that the Japanese hierarchy had a greater number of roles particularily for the peasants. Wherase the European peasants were not necessarily divided into actual roles, the Japanese were. As well the addition of a Shogun is different from any role preseted within European feudalism. Since within European feudalism the monarch would fufill both the role of the emperor and the shogun in one.
