Bartolomeu Dias [c. 1450-May 29, 1500] discovered that it was possible to sail southward down the west coast of Africa, raound the continent's most southerly points, and either sail northward back up the east African coast or northeasterly towards India. So the navigator proved the existence of a sea route around southernmost Africa, and across the Indian ocean for direct trade with India. And he thereby made it possible for Portugal, and other countries, to challenge the total control of the Middle Eastern middleman over European trade with Africa and Asia.
