Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948) was a principle spiritual leader in India, and helped persuade Britain to return independence to the country after World War II.
Gandhi led a salt march in India to protest a tax on it. He did not believe in violence, and would not hurt anybody. He was given the honorific title of Mahatma, which means "great soul."
