An 'Heir Apparent' is a person who stands to inherit something and can not be moved down the line of succession by someone with a better claim.

For example, the heir apparent to Queen Elizabeth II is her eldest son Prince Charles. His position inf the line of succession cannot be displaced because he is the eldest child, therefore has the best claim to the throne.
