The sea routes to North Africa and Red Sea from Europe were blocked by the Ottoman Empire in 1453. They were important trade routes for spice and silk trade. Hence exploring new routes for trade was a chief cause. This led to discovery of Spain and discoveries in Africa, and the Atlantic.

I believe (although with only a grade 8 knowledge this might not be complete) that the Europeans started exploring the world due to the expansion cities and want of further and more extensive foreign trade. Also, the few explorers out there with a dying curiosity to make that big discovery.

One of the main ones was loss of access to trade with the Orient via the ancient Silk Road due to wars in countries along the route and raiders attacking the caravans and stealing the goods.
