to be more specific they were not slaves. the colonies had started importing indentured servants from England and tried turning some native Americans into indentured servants. the first African's in America were also indentured servants capable of gaining freedom in seven years or 21 if they were born into indentured servitude in America. this was an attempt to acquire servants that wouldn't be able to go home. this was extremely effective because of no way for them to return. it was then a slow transition that took more than 50 years before they were actually considered slaves. another interesting point is that slavery historically was never an issue of race until America. before America ,slavery was slavery. you were either born into it or you weren't, black, white, brown or purple.
