I'm writing this answer in 2008, so 5 years ago is 2003.

- Canadian Singer and naturalized US citizen Gisele MacKenzie died of colon cancer.

- The New York Times reports a US government cutback on the use of lie detector tests to screen Nuclear Agency employees.

- A crude joke in the comic Doonsbury leads to a loss of about half of newspapers syndicating the lame, whiny political comic. Bloom County forever! (Pardon my own, personal editorial.)

- A magnitude 3.1 earthquake is detected just before 6 am off the coast of Sept-Îles, Quebec. The name means "Seven Islands".

- "Democracy is on the march" in Iraq, as Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld tours military bases according to a DefendAmerica.mil news story. Clearly things in Iraq will be all rainbows and unicorns in no time.

How old is this post? If you asked in 2007, you may have meant Sept 5th, 2002. In which case:

- Cosmologist David Todd Wilkinson, world renowned specialist in cosmic microwave background radiation, dies. His death is ruled "untimely" by Wikipedia, which characteristically has no source or further informaton for this claim. [citation needed]

- The New York Times has an amusing piece about a strange phenominon of "open source" software starting to make headway in government applications entitled "An Alternative To Microsoft Gains Support In High Places"

- The Irish Examiner reports that instances of internet child pornography increase 50% every year. "We are not aware of any cases here, but it is entirely possible."

- Magnitude 5.2 earthquake shakes Masset, BC, population 940. Is it just me, or does Canada keep WAY too close of tabs on their earthquake activity?
