Mahjong's inventor was an Asian Princess who was bored and cut out the pieces by hand then carved shapes into them. The idea was for each player to build walls that the other players could not defeat. In the 1920's, the game hit the United States and became quite popular when the shapes were translated and numbers were added to the pieces so they more resembled playing cards.
