The Neolithic Period (10,000-3,000 B.C.) is also known as the New Stone Age. Middle Easterners learned to plant and cultivate grains during this period which triggered the switch from hunting and gathering to agriculture. Domesticated animals were also developed during this time and because of agriculture, large populations could be fostered and permanent settlements were established.
