Powder tells the story of a young boy and his father's adventures on a ski trip. The parents are separated or divorced; the father has promised to have the boy back to his mother in time for Christmas Eve dinner. However, the dad (being one who lives "in the moment") decides to get in a few last runs, which causes them to become stuck in a snowstorm. The father forsakes all he has - his Austin Healey and driving skills - in order to keep his promise to the boy's mother. Throughout the story, the boy gradually learns to live in the moment, entering the world his father comfortably lives in.
