Presidios were military forts built to protect the land.

Most of the soldiers came from Mexico. Both the soldiers and their families lived in the presidio, and it was the job of the soldier to guard the presidio, as well as nearby missions.

Daily duties included guard watch (watching over the presidio), checking their weapons, and training in case they were attacked by the enemy. The soldiers and their families also had these other responsibilities:

Taking care of livestock

Harvesting crops

Teaching Native Americans different trades (such as carpentry, cooking, and sewing)
