What do you mean by prior name? There has only been one name of China! It is the People's Republic of China. Another spelling(it still means People's Republic of China) for it is Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo.

Well being that China is one of the world's oldest people and continuous civilizations, dating back more than six millennia AND the fact that China for most of that millennia was not united but rather was separated into provinces, you'd have to ask what was the old name of a certain area of China. Otherwise, there's no single answer.

Zhongguo and Zhonghua. Cathay is the medieval European name for China, popularised by Marco Polo.
