After Rome fell there was no structure in society. No one to take care of the roads, aqueduct's, and other business. Feudalism supplied a form of structure and protection that people didn't have. Until feudalism every thing was pure chaos.

It allowed for a class system to emerge which encompassed everyone. When Rome fell, there was no social structure. The ruling nation and way of life for nearly 1000 years fell. With that structure gone, people were left alone and defenseless. This allowed a warrior class to emerge and help those in need. Feudalism was created as a way of bargaining. The serf was a working, paid slave (for lack of a better description). They would report to an overload, who, in return for working the lands and providing services which the then budging "noble class" either didn't know how to do or would not do because it was beneath them, provided protection.
