Fifty-five men worked on it from May to September and each one came to the convention with ideas about government. During the process they had to compromise and shape their views and ideas to form a working government. In a group not everyone can get everything they want all the time. This is the art of compromise.

During Constitutional Convention states could not decide on many issues because some states were big some small, some had large population some small, some had slavery some didn't. That's why they had to compromise on those issues: Great Compromise - bicameral Congress. House of Representatives is based on population of the state, while Senate is only 2 senators per state. This ensured equall representation of states in the government. Sectional Compromise - they decided not to talk about slavery for 20 years. 3/5th Compromise - slaves would count as 3/5 of population. Missouri Compromise - this compromise divided south and north, north states were free states and south states were slave states. This is why Constitution is a bunch of compromises, these are 3 major compromises. History Freak

It was not "a" compromise, it was the product of many compromises. Some examples: How were the states to be represented in the Congress? Compromise- All states equal in one house ,Senate, and representation based upon population in the other, The House of Representatives. This is called a"bi-cameral legislature"; Perhaps the most obvious and odious compromise was on the issue of counting slaves for the purpose of determining representation in the House. To count or not to count was the Question. Compromise- 3/5ths of the slaves in a state were to be included ina stste's population to apportion representation; Other comromises dealt with such issues as: Powers to be retained by the States; The role of the chief executive in making laws; Can governmental officials be removed from office and for what offences; and many others.

In US history, two compromises regarding the US Constitution stand out. One was that slavery would not be abolished. However, in 10 years, no longer would slaves be imported. Also, the ratification of the US Constitution was the addition of what is the Bill of Rights. The 10 rights were included to satisfy non-Federalists who wanted written guarantees concerning important civil liberties spelled out. The Federalists believed this was not needed because the constitution did not have any powers that would take away rights already granted to the states.

The main compromise in the original US constitution was about slavery, which was permitted in some states and prohibited in others.
