Every wrong imaginable. Their land was taken, they were herded into concentration camps, they were hunted like wild animals. When it was finally agreed that they were human, their children were taken from them to be 'assimilated'. Even today, an Aborigine has a life expectancy 17 years less than that of a white, and is 13 times more likely to end up in prison.

The Aborigines were not herded into "concentration camps", but they were dispossessed of their land and, much later, "encouraged" onto reserves, supposedly for their protection. They were forced off their traditional hunting grounds, and certainly herded away from the fertile coastal areas where there was plenty of food. White settlers wrecked the very effective native fishing traps, cleared native habitats and reduced the native food supplies, as well as polluting their water.

Massacres of the indigenous people occurred on a regular basis. The Coniston massacre, the massacre at Myall Creek, the "Battle of Risdon" in Tasmania and many others, all were perpetrated against the Aborigines by the Europeans. There were years of conflict between Tasmanian Aborigines and white settlers which eventually resulted in the loss of the purebred aboriginal race from Tasmania - virtually genocide.

The Europeans also introduced foods and diseases, all of which were perfectly harmless to the white settlers, but lowered the life expectancy of the aboriginal people. Simple diseases like Measles and Influenza had devastating effects on Aborigines. Foods containing wheat and sugar resulted in Heart disease and obesity among the indigenous Australians.

When the aboriginal children were forcibly taken from their families, this directly led to a loss of culture, language, customs and traditions among the Aborigines. When the Europeans first came to Australia, there were around 250 different aboriginal languages in Australia. There is just a fraction of that number now. Many stories from the aboriginal Dreaming (creation legends) have disappeared forever.

What kind of government did the aboriginals have?

The Aborigines of Australia never had a single body of government nor any system at all. Instead there were many tribes of Aborigines each owning their own separate territorys. The Aborigines were nomadic despite popular belief that they were one people with one 'civilization'. This means that they never really owned the land but rather tended to travel through their own territory collecting and trading with other tribes. Hence, this is the reason why the Aborigines failed to mount any form of threat against the first settlers in 1788. For example, the Native Indians of North America despite losing the war were well armed with guns stolen from the European settlers. Not only that but they were well organized in mounting successful and significant attacks against them. A similar thing happened in New Zealand, where conflicts broke out between the Maori natives and new settlers, which later came to be known as the New Zealand Land Wars. The Maori were also successful in some ways because of their organized resistance which led to the Treaty of Waitangi. However, the most resistance the Aborigines launched against the settlers were crop damage to starve the newcomers. There were a few natives who managed to launch some type of warfare such as Bennelong but all failed to unite and meet this challenge. So to answer your question, no the Aborigines never had any form of government nor civilization for that matter. The height of their technology was stone tools. And to those who say that we exterminated them are wrong, in fact disease killed the majority of Aborigines who had no natural immunity. This led to lands being mainly empty before they were even settled. Do not get me wrong, I feel deep sympathy for those who died during the early years and for the injustices against the natives but a facts a fact, and that the Aborigines would still be where they are today without British colonisation.

What is wrong with the Australian Flag?

The problem with the Australian flag is that it lacks meaning for the Aborigines, the original inhabitants of Australia. It does not reflect any indigenous beliefs or traditions, in either its colours or in its symbolism. Its design reflects Australia's British heritage and the fact that the nation was colonised by England, as it is dominated by the Union Jack. Australia is also now a Sovereign Independent Nation and no longer a British Colony or Dominion so the current flag falsely implies allegiance to the UK .
