As any other property was auctioned such as cattle. The slaves were publicly displayed and bids were made. The bidders would inspect the individuals who were being sold. Slaves were considered personal property (even if they were men, women, and children) and that is exactly what they were treated as (by most slave owners) you could legally treat them in any way you pleased.

Some slaves were taken to America while others would be taken right back to Europe. Americans bought the slaves to work for them.
