Well this all depends on what group of Weavers you're talking about?? There seems to be a number of groups called 'The Weavers' One of the most popular being the influential American Folk Music quartet of the late 1940s and early 1950s, consisting of Pete Seeger, Lee Hayes, Fred Hellerman, and Ronnie Gilbert. There's also the guild of Weavers who based in the City of London and help to preserve and improve craftmanship. But more interestingly is a group that seem connected to the Cathars religious sect. These chaps were persecuted by the Roman Catholic church as heretics and the Weavers seem to have been part of this group. 14 July, 2009

There was no weavers sect associated with the medieval Cathars. This is an invention of David McCandless who was hired to write, design and virally promote a film released by Universal Studios. See http://www.davidmccandless.com/2008/07/09/wanted-viral/

The medieval Cathar movement did not create secret codes or the like embedded in weavings, paintings or other objects. There was never a prophecy concerning the year 2012 or any specific year.

Good Christians today, as in the past, are simple living, plain speaking pacifists.

The term "Cathars" derives from the Greek word Katheroi and means "Pure Ones". They were a gnostic Christian sect that arose in the 11th century, an offshoot of a small surviving European gnostic community that emigrated to the Albigensian region in the south of France. The medieval Cathar movement flourished in the 12th century A.D. throughout Europe until its virtual extermination at the hands of the Inquisition in 1245.

There are an ever increasing number of historians and other academics engaged in serious Cathar studies. Interestingly, to date, the deeper they have dug, the more they have vindicated Cathar claims to represent a survival of the earliest Christian Church.

Thank you!

What were 3 types of shops in an Elizabethan town?

In fact shops were not as we see today. Many shops were in fact stalls, mostly on wheels with a picture of what the owner was selling. They did this because the majority could not read so pictures of their wares really was the first advertising. Many poor people sat or stood on the sides of roads selling from baskets and wooden boxes. Fruit and vegetables, meats and bread where the main grocery product line. Note that when we say fruit it was very basic, apples and some Cherry types were the seasonal lines - potatoes were just introduced but were not sold in any amount as they were to be brought in from "the new world". Weavers sold some clothing, blankets and tapestries but it was the very rich who bought these. There were cobblers who used the hides of animals to make soft shoes - these were very important retailers as leather was expensive although reasonable abundant

What are facts about the power loom?

In 1784 Edmund Cartwright visited a factory owned by Richard Arkwright. Inspired by what he saw, he began working on a machine that would improve the speed and quality of weaving. Employing a blacksmith and a carpenter to help him, Cartwright managed to produce what he called a power loom. He took out a patent for his machine in 1785, but at this stage it performed poorly. In 1787 Cartwright opened a weaving mill in Doncaster and two years later began using steam engines produced by James Watt and Matthew Boulton, to drive his looms. All operations that had been previously been done by the weaver's hands and feet, could now be performed mechanically. The main task of the weavers employed by Cartwright was repairing broken threads on the machine. Although these power looms were now performing well, Cartwright was a poor businessman and he eventually went bankrupt. In 1802 William Horrocks, a Stockport cotton manufacturer, patented an improved power-loom. It featured a more effective way of winding the woven cloth onto a beam at the back of the loom. Over the next twenty years further improvements took place and by 1823 Richard Guest was able to claim that "a boy or girl aged fourteen or fifteen could manage two power-looms and could produce three and a half times as much as the best handloom weaver". By 1850 there were 250,000 cotton power-looms in Britain, of which nearly 177,000 were in Lancashire.

What was the economy of Indus Valley civilization?

Agriculture: Agriculture was the main occupation of the Indus Valley people. Crops such as wheat, barley, peas and bananas were raised. In the olden days, there was enough rain in that region and occasional floods brought a great deal of fertile soil to the area. People used to plough the land with wooden ploughshares drawn by men and oxen. From the existence of granaries it is concluded that there were surplus food-grains.Domestication of Animals: The people of Harappa domesticated animals like oxen, buffaloes, pigs, goats and sheep. Camels and asses were used as means of transport. Dogs and cats were kept as pets. The humped bull was considered a great asset in the farming community. Crafts The discovery of spindles at the sites of Harappan culture shows that the people used to spin and weave. Goldsmiths made jewellery of gold, silver and precious stones. People were also engaged in brick-laying and in the art of sculpture. The making of seals was developed during this period. Bronze-smiths made various types of weapons and tools such as knives, spears, saws and axes which were used in daily life.Trade: Traders carried on trade in the country as well as with other countries like Egypt, Babylon and Afghanistan. Many seals of Harappa found in Mesopotamia show that trade existed between the two countries. They used 16 and its multiplies: 64, 160 and 320, in measurement and weight.
