King George V's successor was his eldest son Edward, Prince of Wales, who became Edward VIII. However, he was only king for about 9 months, in 1936, and never actually crowned, due to his involvement with the American socialite Wallace Simpson. 'Mrs. Simpson' as she was known, could not have become his Queen as she was a divorcee, and at the time the Anglican Church (of which the British monarch is meant to be 'Defender of the Faith') did not allow divorcees to marry in church. Social convention of the day would not have tolerated an English monarch NOT to marry in church- in addition, Mrs. Simpson was an American citizen, and although technically there would have been no bar to her taking out British citizenship, many English people would not have tolerated having a Queen who came from what was a former British colony.
Edward thus had to choose between his love for Wallace and taking the British crown- he chose Wallace and abdicated as King, so was replaced in late '36 by his younger brother, who became George VI.
Wallace and Edward went to live in France and managed to remain there even throughout the War years, being unmolested and left in peace by the occupying Nazis. Edward died in 1972, Wallace Simpson in '86.
