Prince Henry was the Portuguese prince of Portugal and made a name for himself at the capture of Ceuta in 1415. During the war with the Moors his sailors reached parts of the ocean before unknown. He created an observatory and school for navigation and sent his pupils on voyages of discovery. His pupils found the Madeira Islands in 1418. In 1433 one his mariners sailed around Cape Nun and touch the Cape Bojador; in 1440 Cape Bianco was reached. Up to this point the prince paid all the costs of the trips, but he decided to form societies for the purpose to pay for them. In 1446 Henry's captain Nuno Tristam doubled Cape Verde and in 1448 Gonzales Vallo discovered three of the Azores. Henry died in 1460 after his sailors had reached Sierra Leone.
