Anna Maria Lane was born in 1773. During her childhood, she had no formal education, but in her later years, she trained to be a nurse. She married John Lane.
When the American Revolution began, she enlisted as a nurse in the Connecticut Coastal Line and her husband, John, enlisted as a soldier. She was a nurse until the Battle of Germantown. In that battle, she disguised herself as a man and put on soldier's garb so that she could fight. She was wounded in the leg and was lame for the rest of her life.
Anna Maria Lane was one of the few women to fight in the Revolutionary War. After the war ended, she was recognized by the Virginia General Assembly for "performing extraordinary military services with the courage of a soldier". She died on June 13, 1810 at the age of 37.
