John Henry Newton was a British sailor & Anglican clergyman. He started his career at sea, at a young age, and he became involved with the slave trade for a few years, and He was enslaved himself for a period of time. He became a minister, hymn-writer, and later a prominent supporter of the abolition of slavery. He was a author of many hymns, including "Amazing Grace: and "Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken."

BUT WHEN did he think of this sextant... That is the question of which we are actually discussing!!!
