Many of the settlers thought that the powerful United States would want to expand northward into New Brunswick. However, if they were part of Canada they would be better able to defend against this threat. People thought that Confederation would help the economy by providing a larger market for their goods, and a link to the other colonies through the Intercolonial Railway. Fraud and Coercion. New Brunswick did not want to join Confederation and petitioned Queen Victoria to save them. She did not. The people of New Brunswick voted against Confederation in 1865. In 1866 they voted for Pro-Confederation representatives under the agreement that they would get better terms. They did not. The promise of 1/3 of cabinet posts for the Maritime provinces as well as an equal elected senate never made it to the BNA act. They joined because the elite found it to be profitable to them at the time. When it comes to Canadian history it is rare for there to be one right answer even though this is the one recently presented to the Supreme Court of Canada it is not the only answer

New Brunswick did not want to join Confederation because the central government were paying each colony a subsidy, depending on the colony's population. However, each person in New Brunswick were 80 cents each, so that's why they did not want to join.

Well, originally, New Brunswick wanted to join with Nova Scotia and PEI in a Maritime Union, but when John A. McDonald and George Brown got themselves in invited to the meetings, they persuaded Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to join Confederation. PEI did NOT join at this time because they felt no need.
