Before the Civil War there was the Second Great Awakening, a religious revival that strongly affected the religious life of the Americans. Charles Grandison Finney was an important preacher during this time who told people that they could be salved through their own work. He obtained many followers and he evangelised so many people in New York that there practically left no one to be converted, hence the name burnt-over district.
