The Europeans were important in the American Revolution because they were one of two sides in the war. Britain was taxing its colonies heavily, and one group of colonists, the Patriots, wanted to break away from Britain by declaring war against Britain, its own mother country. On the other hand, another group of colonists, the Loyalists, wanted to remain loyal to Britain and refuse to fight.

The other reason why the Europeans were important in the American Revolution was that during the war, France became an ally to the colonists and helped the Patriots defeat Britain. France wanted revenge for losing the French and Indian War, an earlier war where France lost most of its land to Britain, and France decided to help the colonists and defeat Britain.

After the American Revolution, Britain set the colonies free with the Treaty of Paris, 1783.
