John Adams(1800) , John Quincy Adams (1828), Martin Van Buren (1840) , Grover Cleveland (1888) , William Howard Taft (1912) , Herbert Hoover (1932), Jimmy Carter (1980) and George H. W. Bush (1992) all lost in their bid to be re-elected. Incumbent Gerald Ford, who was not elected, but became president when Nixon resigned, also lost his bid for another term in 1975. Franklin Pierce lost his bid to be nominated for another term in 1856.
