At the battle of Vimy Ridge, the Canadian troops attacked German-held positions at the north end of the Battle of Arras. Although the attack was originally conceived as a diversionary tactic for a French offensive at Nivelle, the Canadians took and held the ridge.

At February 1917, Arthur Currie was given the duty of taking Vimy Ridge. The German position on the ridge was invincible but Currie knew better. He made a scale model and made the soldiers rehearse their manoeuvres and attacks until they knew their jobs by heart. Planes flew scouting missions and clearly plotted out the positions of the German guns. Underground tunnels were built to move troops and artillery safely and secretly.

The plan was for the troops to follow a massive barrage of artillery fire on the German position. Usually, troops waited for days for artillery fire to blow out enemy guns before they dared advance. By following the artillery, Canadians gained the element of surprise and took the ridge. Canadians won the only significant victory for the Allies in 1917. It was mainly because of this that Canada gained a separate seat at the peace talks after the war.

Great answer! The Canadian generals' methodology was to fire their shells far short of the enemy trenches so that the Germans mocked their inaccuracy. As their troops began the advance, the Canadian shells were fired another 100 or so feet forward enabling the troops to creep ahead but remain behind the raised smoke and dust. They could not proceed quickly lest they be wiped out by their own salvos. By keeping behind this " creeping barrage," the Canadians advanced to within fairly close range of the Germans undetected and thus were able to effect a surprise assault on the trenches. But the price of victory was still high. German machine guns still wiped out hundreds -- but not enough to keep their trenches from being overrun.
