I am assuming, first of all, that you are asking about the American Revolution also known as the War for American Independence? If so, the official first battle was fought on the morning of April 19, 1775 on Lexington Green in Lexington, Massachusetts. There are many great sources of information, but I loved both Howard Fast's Across Five Aprils or Barbara Tuchman's The First Salute.
The first shots in the Revolutionary War were fired at Lexington in April 1775 and the Declaration of Independence formally breaking the link between the colonies and Britain was signed on 4 July 1776.
The colonists were outnumbered at Lexington, and fell back to Concord, where they again engaged the British regulars at the North Bridge. The battle at the North Bridge is the one Ralph Waldo Emerson was describing when he penned the phrase "the shot heard 'round the world."
The general term for the first military engagement is "the Battle of Lexington and Concord." It was fought, obviously, in Lexington and Concord, but less obviously in Lincoln, Menotomy (now Arlington), and Cambridge, as the colonial militia pursued the retreating British troops back to Boston.
The Revolutionary War was said to begin in Massachusetts. Specifically, it began when a large group of redcoats went on march to Concord, to seize colonial gunpowder stores, and arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock. The redcoats were met by a small militia in the village green of Lexington, en route to Concord. These militiamen were easily beaten, but gave the people of Concrod time to prepare for the redcoats' arrival. The redcoats were driven to retreat, and suffered a large number of casualties as they fled back to Boston.
The Revolutionary War began about 1776, when the French and Spanish joined the war, and the war ended October, 1781 when a British General surrendered knowing that the war was over.
