the US did not buy Hawaii.

During the 1800's Hawaii was becoming more important for commercial export and as a strategic location for military defense in the Pacific region(Let's face it, the US was also becoming concerned about the possibility that Hawaii might become part of a European nation's empire... Great Britain or France)

In 1893 Queen Liliuokalani proposed a new Hawaiian constitution, that would restore the power of the Hawaiian monarchy...Five years later, on July 7, 1898, U.S. President McKinley signed a bill which resulted in the United States Annexing Hawaii.

The state of Hawaii was not purchased, it was a military action that led to the United States owning the Territory of Hawaii in 1893. It was kept as a territory until 1959, when it was officially named a state of the United States.
