"Freedom has a taste, and for those who have fought for it, the taste is so sweet the protected will never know ..." ~ General George S. Patton

General George S. Patton, did not author this quote, nor did it apply to any who have fought!

It applied to me, a veteran of two wars!

The actual quote:

"For those that will fight for it...FREEDOM...has a flavor the protected shall never know"

L/Cpl Edwin L. "Tim" Craft

1968 Khe Sanh Combat Base

Mr. Craft, did however appear in the movie "Patton" as one of the cast of thousands in 1969, and he was assigned to an Anti Tank Battalion, during periods of heavy combat, in real life.

The Above Answer is Wrong.

The actual full quote is as follows:

"You've never lived until you've almost died. For those who have fought for it, life has a flavor the protected shall never know"

It was written by French author Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant (05 August 1850 -- 06 July 1893). Guy de Maupassant died when Patton was 8 years old.

Patton may have rewritten the line, but it certainly did not originate with him.

References:

I have references to back up this edit, but Answers dot com won't allow links in posts. Doing a search of the quote and the author I cited will verify what I've written.

How did women's changing role affect families?

Women's changing role affected families because of the change in home life. Women no longer wanted to be known as just a "house cleaner". Women began going out to work, protesting, or during the time of 'flappers', were going out with their friends. Women were not as often home with their families and placed more responsiblity on the husband and children.

What role did the battle of gallipoli play in World War 1?

Quote from the Related Link: "In Australia and New Zealand, the campaign was the first major battle undertaken by a joint military formation, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), and is often considered to mark the birth of national consciousness in both of these countries. ANZAC Day (April 25) remains the most significant commemoration of military casualties and veterans in Australia and New Zealand, surpassing Armistice Day/Remembrance Day."Gallipoli was significant for several reasons:It was the first time that Australian men had fought as "Australians", united under the flag of the Commonwealth of Australia. Patriotism was particularly important at this stage of Australia's history. The battle of Gallipoli, although a monumental failure, brought out the very best in the men who fought - and died - there. Stories of heroism were rife, and the comradeship was embodied in that Australian quality known as "mateship" - the self-sacrificing willingness to lay down one's own life for a "mate".Gallipoli gave rise to enduring legends such as Simpson and his Donkey. Simpson cheerfully carried wounded men up and down Shrapnel Gully for three weeks before he was finally killed by a Turkish sniper. Simpson is remembered for his heroism.
