The first President of the Continental Congress was Peyton Randolph, who served from September to October of 1774.

The first President of the Continental Congress upon the ratification of the Articles of Confederation was Samuel Huntington; he served from September of 1779 to July of 1781, the Articles of Confederation were ratified during his term (March 1st, 1781). He retired from office mid-term and Thomas McKean succeeded him until November 1781.

The first president to serve a full 1-year term under the Articles of Confederation was John Hanson, from November 1781 to November 1782. It should be noted that under the Articles of Confederation, the President of Congress was elected from among the members of Congress, by the members of Congress.

However, the title of "President of Congress" bears no resemblance to the position of "President of the United States of America" as it currently exists. George Washington was the first president under the Constitution of the United States of America and took his oath of office on April 30, 1789.
