The color red is used for the spectrum of light it falls in. Each spectrum has a different wavelength. Blue for example has a very high frequency/short wavelength causing the sky to be blue because it refracts off many many more particles before it arrives at your eye. Sunsets are orange/yellow/red because that end of the spectrum has much slower frequency and long wavelength allowing it to travel much further.

So red is stop because you need to be aware of the "warning/danger" signal much further out than you would of a "safe/all clear"

BECAUSE GREEN IS AN IMPORTANT COLORRRR!!!!!
