1. The pyramids (built as tombs for Egyptian kings, or pharaohs) are some of the most well-known structures which survive from the ancient world.

2. The Ancient Egyptians lived along the Nile River in Egypt, beginning around 5000 BC. There are many dynasties of pharaohs who ruled the land for nearly 3000 years, beginning around 3050 BC.

3. Religion was in every Egyptian's life. They believed in polytheism, which is believing in more than one god or goddess. Egyptians believed that they had to obey their gods to have a good life. After death, the gods would judge them on how well their commands were obeyed.

4. The pyramid tombs often contained many of the treasures and worldly goods of the deceased pharaoh, which were there for his use in the afterlife. Although looters later stole much of it, huge collections of these items have been recovered in modern times. This includes the preserved (mummified) bodies of the pharaohs themselves.

5. Astronomy, despite the lack of telescopes, was well developed in Egypt. The cycles of the Sun, Moon, stars, and visible planets were computed and recorded.

6. The Egyptians developed paper (made from crushed papyrus reeds) and a written scripted language. They also used pictograms (hieroglyphics) which for hundreds of years were nearly impossible to accurately decipher. Fortunately a translation was eventually made possible using carvings such as the Rosetta Stone.

Ancient Egypt was an ancient civilization of eastern North Africa, concentrated along the lower reaches of the Nile River in what is now the modern country of Egypt. The civilization coalesced around 3150 BC with the political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under the first pharaoh, and it developed over the next two millennia. ancient Egypt reached its pinnacle during the New Kingdom, after which it entered a period of slow decline. Egypt was conquered by a succession of foreign powers and the rule of the pharaohs officially ended in 31 BC when the early Roman Empire conquered Egypt and made it a province.

The Pharaoh? There were about 300 in the 3000 year span of Egyptian controlled Egypt.
When pharoahs died they were mummified and buried deep inside a pyramid. They were supposed to be men. They often married their mother/cousin/sister etc. They were buried with their treasure and often had mazes installed in their burial chambers to keep away robbers. People thought they were living gods.
