They tried kings, then switched to oligarchs (aristocrats) to lead them. The oligarchs abused power for their own benefit, and ran a society where farmers who could not repay debts after a bad season were sold into foreign slavery to pay out the debt. As revolution was looming the aristocrat Solon was appointed dictator to solve the problem. He did some good, but the aristocrats re-asserted control, so the people appointed a tyrant to establish a rule which was fair to all. This experiment, after initial success, began to fail and so a new form of government was trialled - democracy where the people (adult male citizens) met in assembly and voted on political matters. It worked for a period, but inevitably populist democratic leader started twisting things to the benefit of themselves and their cronies, and led the city into disastrous war, so the city reverted eventually to trying versions of the earlier forms of government.

It's important to respect your country and feel patriotic about it (patriotic means the love of your country).
Ensuring the safety of citizens is essential for promoting social stability, trust in government, and overall well-being of a nation. When citizens feel safe, they are more likely to actively participate in society, contribute to the economy, and work towards common goals. Additionally, protecting citizens from harm is a fundamental responsibility of governments to uphold human rights and maintain law and order.
There are a number of duties that Pericles felt were important for a citizen. One of such responsibilities was voting which he urged all citizens to participate in.

Yes they can. A government is many things beyond the military. Most governments are responsible for or oversee with laws, a country's infrastructure, health and safety, education, commerce practices, and people's rights by providing a system of due process to redress wrongs against individuals and the citizenry in general. Depending on the government, there are various other social needs that a government is responsible for. No matter how you feel about your government's war and military policy, you can support your government in many ways from volunteering at election time to participating in policy making at your local schools. Government includes local, state, and federal agencies that have many needs for citizens support. If you are fortunate enough to live in a country where you can tell your government how you feel about their policies without fear of punishment, then you should do so. That in itself is supporting your government because a government is supposed to be responsible to it's citizens.

The social contract is a theory that suggests individuals give up some of their freedoms to the government in exchange for protection and promotion of their rights. Governments can break the social contract by failing to uphold the laws, violating human rights, engaging in corruption, or not providing basic services to citizens. When these breaches occur, citizens may lose trust in the government and feel justified in challenging or overthrowing it.
