They were like landlords (sort of). The peasants harvested food and cultivated the land, then they gave it to their lord (aka Barons) as tax. The Barons also provided protection against barbarian invasion with his knights. In the feudal pyramid, king and queen first, then barons along with the church, the knights then finally the peasants.
They were either Kings, Queens, or nobles.
The barons were the lowest level of titled nobility. The were above free men, and below earls (in England, called counts elsewhere), marquesses, dukes, and princes, in order from lowest to highest rank. Because there were a fair number of them and they all had their own knights, they were able to do such things as pressure King John of England into signing the Magna Carta.

Barons maintained one or more castles as military strong points. They controlled lands and forests and collected taxes to support their activities. They were subject to the King's laws as they applied to the nobility, and were required to share tax money with the King, and to come when the King called, with a substantial army to defend the King's lands and rights, or to support the King in battles elsewhere.
Yes, the Barons promised William loyalty and Knights, and the Knights promised loyalty to their Barons and 40 days a year of service in William's army.
He doesn't really have any good accomplishments but he did do stuff as give England to the pope, raise illegal taxes, tare down peoples shrubs, imprisoned barons, took and tortured barons relatives, took there property and hired foreign soldiers to fight his own people
Barons leased land from the King which was known as a manor. They were known as the Lord of the Manor and were in complete control of this land. They established their own system of justice, minted their own money and set their own taxes. In return for the land they had been given by the King, the Barons had to serve on the royal council, pay rent and provide the King with Knights for military service when he demanded it. They also had to provide lodging and food for the King and his court when they traveled around the country. The Barons kept as much of their land as they wished for their own use, then divided the rest among their Knights. Barons were very rich.
A Baron was a noble given land and power by a king in exchange for soldiers in the Kings army.(This concept is called Feudalism) A Baroness was most commonly a Barons wife but they could also be female Barons.

Robber barons
The Kings led the way, their Lords and Barons followed their example, knights and horsemen followed the lords and the common soldiers filled the gaps .
King John infringed the rights of the Barons by giving them little freedom and lack of safety from their own knights. If thought guilty a person was put in jail, with no trial ( justice). The barons also had no protection of property and knights could take what they pleased. These are just some of the ways that King John infringed on the rights of the Barons.
