'Litters' like this were for the rich who wished to travel in style, protected from the rain or the sun. Or for those whowere ill or old.

Coaches would have been useless on the rough tracks which passed for Medieval main roads.

Litters, carried by beefy chaps, had been around since ancient times.

The development of the breast band for horses in early medieval times meant shafts could be slotted in. Horsescould bear the burden, and were able to travel further than men on foot

Transportation was very basic in the middle ages. Most people never traveled far from their home village or town.

The basic transportation for most people was walking. Goods were carried, or transported in hand carts. Horses were expensive, and were used by the well off. Heavier goods might be moved shorter distances by ox cart.

Some long distance trade did exist. Because of the unreliable condition of roads over long distances merchants moved goods overland by pack animal train in many cases.
