When the western part of the Roman Empire fell, the so-called barbarian tribes encroached upon Europe and there were what amounted to a power struggle between warlords from time to time. Europe entered a period called the Dark Ages because most intellectual and practical advances of civilization came to a standstill. When the eastern part of the empire went down, the Islamic culture took over.
